Jim Whitlock
Jim Whitlock started drawing when he was three years old and airplanes seemed to be his favorite subject. His mother had an artistic ability and always encouraged him even when he drew on some surfaces he was forbidden to touch. Jim grew up In East Point on the approach to the north south runway of the Atlanta municipal airport so he studied everything that he saw flying over. All through elementary school he was always involved in art shows and anything to show his ability.
While attending Headland High School he and a friend camped over night on the creek behind Conley hills elementary school and got up at dawn and set up the easels in the creek and painted the surrounding landscape. The oil painting took the second place ribbon at Headlands Fall Art Show.
Jim joined the Navy after high school and took along with him his God given talent. While in Viet Nam he kept busy painting nose art on navy and marine helicopters and any other duties that involved a paint brush.
1969 he was released from active duty and started working for Eastern air lines. While at Eastern he started painting the retirement posters for the outgoing pilots. That was a big challenge for Jim but a lot of exposure for his work! Jim has finished over two thousand commissions and has work at NAS Atlanta and Robbins Air Museum. Jim ended up retiring from the USPS and resides with his wife, Jo Carole, in Tyrone, GA. Jim and Jo Carole met while working at Eastern. She was a flight attendant for twenty five years.
